Wow!! We had a major ice storm and the trees and power lines went down big time all over this area. We lost our electricity January 27 at about 1 AM and it came on for about 2 hours that afternoon and went off again. That time it stayed off for a whole week and about 14 hours. What a time we had trying to keep warm. We have a fireplace but of course the blower didn’t work with no power so we only got the radiated heat. That was pretty good but we live in a double wide mobile home and it’s about 1765 square feet of floor space and heat just can’t radiate that far. Plus, we added a two story garage to the end of the house and the upper floor is 24 X 28 feet and that got very little heat. It’s a good thing I insulated the heck out of it when we built it or the pipes would have frozen for sure. Our house has 6 inch walls with R-19 insulation and there is R-30 insulation in the attic and also the windows are double pane so this is a really tight and snug home. It was a good thing we hve several kerosene lamps for just this kind of power loss. Stores sold out of kerosene and lamp wicks in short order.
The temperature got down to 14º on at least two nights and we added lots more cover to the bed and Glenda slept on a patio recliner in front of the fireplace so she could add logs to the fire all night as needed. The temp never dropped below 58º in the house but that’s nippy if you aren’t used to it. What a great wife I have and I love and appreciate her more than I can say!
There are still several thousand people without power here in Northwest Arkansas and they say it may be another week or ten days before it’s all restored. The temps are gradually warming up and it will be in the 60s this weekend and that’s a blessing for those poor folks who are still suffering.
We finally found a 5000 watt generator Monday and bought it. The power came back on the next day, Tuesday the 3rd of Feburary. Not complaining at all because we need a generator. The one I bought will be Aaron’s because he ordered us a 10,ooo watt generator that will run on propane. It will power the whole house and he only needs a small one. I hope it’s a long time before we need to use the one he ordered for us because even burning propane it will cost an arm and leg to run it. That will at least save the food in the refrigerators (2) and the chest type freezer. We will find out how much we lost soon . Our neighbor brought his Hobart 8000 watt welder up and ran it a few hours to cool them this time and we sure appreciated that. Good neighbors are a blessing to have and we appreciate them.
I hope everyone else is doing OK through all this bad weather. I heard from Connie in Michigan snd she said they have frost 4 feet deep up there and it will take a long time for their snow to melt. She is seriously considering moving south. I told her we have a couple of extra rooms. They are afraid Dan might not find work he can do, he works at a truss factory. She manages a senior center up there but she is so capable at so many things she would have no problem finding work. She knows I’m serious about having room for them but I doubt that they will ever leave there.
